VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Rick Featherson had never been very interested in genealogy until the appearance of an old wooden box containing generations of his family's history. Ironically the box had been found in a home owned by his wife's aunt.

The box contained hundreds of family letters, documents and even a speech by Sam Houston. It all read like a history book of Featherston's family and early East Texas.

In 1849, Featherston's forebears, the Coltharps and Bealls, built a two room dogtrot cabin in Van Zandt County where the first sermon in the county was preached and a post office and stagecoach stop operated. With the discovery of the old wooden box, Featherston and his family can better understand the lives of their family who helped establish the area we know today.
