LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) –The Lufkin Independent School District has approved the creation of their own police department. Board members voted to hire the current high school resource officer, Jay Jost, as the ISD police chief.
Superintendent Roy Knight said past campus incidents have heightened awareness of the importance of a police department.
There is already an officer on the high school and middle school campuses as well as an officer from Lufkin Police Department.
Knight said the budget will allow the district to start with one additional officer and gradually add more.
Their relationship with Lufkin Police Department will also continue.
