Authorities arrest Shelby Co. man in shooting

SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - CENTER, TX (PRESS RELEASE) - Sheriff Newton Johnson reports that on April 16, 2010 at approximately 12:15 a.m. the Shelby County Sheriff's Department was notified of a shooting that occurred in the 1000 Block of County Road 2650 in the Shelby Beach Subdivision.  It was further reported that the victim was at Shelby Regional Medical Center.

Shelby County Sheriff's Department Deputy William Lee was dispatched to Shelby Regional Medical Center and learned that the victim was being transferred by Life Flight Helicopter to the Medical Center in Tyler, Texas.  The victim was identified as 41 year old Thomas John Griffin, Jr. who was living at the residence on County Road 2650.

Through further investigation and witness interviews, Deputy Lee learned that the victim had been transported to the hospital by private automobile.  Deputy Lee also learned that the suspect in this shooting was 41 year old Chad Wayne Clifton who also lived at the same residence.

Sheriff Johnson stated that an arrest warrant was issued by Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Jim Powers charging Chad Wayne Clifton with Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon, a Second Degree Felony.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., Sheriff Johnson, Chief Deputy Phillip Baker, Deputy Lee, and Capt. McDaniel executed the arrest warrant at the residence on County Road 2650.  The suspect, Chad Wayne Clifton was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Shelby County Jail.

Sheriff Johnson also stated that the victim, Thomas Griffin was still being treated in Tyler for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
