TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Durwood Dingler was wounded three times while fighting for our country in World War II. It is something he does not talk about much because the memories are too painful and, besides, he has already relived them time and time again in his dreams.
Dingler was 18 and just out of high school when he arrived on the Italian front after only 13 weeks of training. He was wounded by shrapnel his very first day of battle. After a month of recuperation, he returned to battle and was wounded a second time. But only three days before he was to return home, Dingler received his worst wounds. He was shot twice in the leg and could not walk or even move. A fellow soldier saved his life by dragging him off the battlefield. Doctors wanted to amputate his leg, but Penicillin, which had just been discovered saved Dingler's life and his leg.
