LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – They helped prepare tax returns to low income families, free of charge.
Thursday, a group of men and women from across Angelina County were recognized at the Goodwill Office for their participation in the volunteer income tax assistance program otherwise known as "Vita".
"We have 30 volunteers that come together and served 772 hours. We prepared 290 tax returns and that brought back $294,665 back into the community," said development specialist and volunteer Phyllis Handsaker.
This is the third year the Goodwill Office partnered with the IRS to run the Vita program.
Volunteers filed 70 more returns from last year.
