For the second time in as many seasons, all-star basketball players from Angelina County swept their counterparts from Nacogdoches County in KTRE's River Rivalry game held Thursday night at Shands Gymnasium on the Angelina College campus in Lufkin.
Amber Carver of Central High School earned MVP honors with a 22-point performance in Angelina's 48-36 win in the first game. Diboll's Niecy Deason added 10 points and Huntington's Alicia Morris four for the team from south of the river.
Nacogdoches County's Chelsea Leeder of Nacogdoches led the Blue Team with 13 points, followed by Lisa Anthony of Chireno with 12.
In the guys' game, Lufkin's Byron Davis walked away with MVP honors after a 21-point night led his squad to a 72-51 win. Hudson's Damion Williams added 17 and Diboll's Christian Lovelady chipped in 10.
Nac County's Nick Reeves of Cushing led his team with 15 points, followed by Chireno's Andre Johnson with 10.
In the three-point shooting contests, Leeder and Shana Thompson won the girls' round, while Hudson's Williams and Chris Simmons took home the guys' trophy. In the battle for the sexes that followed, Leeder and Thompson beat Williams and Simmons.
