LADY ‘RUNNERS SWEEP TRINITY VALLEY
Regular Season Finale Takes Place Saturday
After Angelina College pitcher Sarah Espinosa pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning of Friday's doubleheader with Trinity Valley, one could see an AC pitcher warming up in the bullpen between the next several innings.
It was Espinosa.
The sophomore lefty said the answer to her early-game pitching issues was far more simple than it looked.
"I just went to the bullpen and worked on a few pitches," Espinosa said. "That's it. I worked on my release point and my grip, just throwing between innings. I started getting a better feel after that."
Did she ever. After giving up three hits and a walk in that first frame, Espinosa went on to retire 18 of the next 21 Lady Cardinal batters in AC's 3-0 win. Espinosa finished with the complete-game win, scattering eight hits while striking out two and walking two – both of those in the first inning.
Offensively, the Lady Roadrunners got RBI from Randi Rascoe, Sam McCord and Amy Holt, each of whom singled in runs. Taylor Sells finished with a pair fo singles and a run scored, as did Holt.
In the nightcap, Lady ‘Runner pitcher Brittney Smith kept Trinity Valley off the scoreboard for the first four innings, finally giving way in the fifth after the Lady Cards' Ashley Hudson ripped a two-run double. Kelseigh Braaton came on in relief of Smith, allowing a run-scoring single to Lisa McAlister; but Jenna Richardson and Lauren Davis came up with big defensive plays over the next couple of innings to help AC to the sweep with a 4-3 win.
Holt doubled, singled and scored twice, and Davis singled and scored twice to account for all of AC's runs. Davis and Kayla Johns drove in runs in the first inning, and McCord drove in another with a second-inning double. Stacie Tassin, Shelby Kimmons, Brittani Stone and Amanda Vincent also singled for the Lady Roadrunners.
AC will close out the regular season at home on Saturday against San Jacinto in a doubleheader scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. The team will celebrate sophomore day in honor of Holt, McCord, Johns, Espinosa, Richardson, Tassin and trainer Megan Whitmire.
