Great weather for Special Olympics track and field competition

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – The annual Special Olympics track and field Spring events are now in the record books.

Under beautiful sunny skies, athletes from across the region competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in a two day meet at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin.

Organizers said Special Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for personal growth.  Athletes compete in Winter and Summer Games at the local, area and state level.  Competition includes bowling in the Fall, and track and field events in the Spring.

On May 4, Law Enforcement Torch Run volunteers (LETR), representing agencies from across the station, will gather on the steps of the state capitol in Austin to kick off the LETR final leg.  The LETR is Special Olympics' largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, according to a news release.

The Torch Run will lead up to the Special Olympics Texas 2010 Summer Games on May 27 – 30 in Arlington.
