SFA men only six strokes off the lead after day one

SPRINGFIELD, La. – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team fired a nine-over par 297 in the opening round of the 2010 Southland Conference Championships Monday morning at Carter Plantation in Hammond, La. SFA is currently fifth overall, only six strokes off the leaders.
 
Junior Kyle Robbins set the tone for the 'Jacks firing an opening-round 73. He is currently tied for 11th overall. Sophomore Stetson McMillan is only a stroke back of Robbins after carding two birdies in his final four holes to finish the day two over par. McMillan is tied for 14th overall. Junior Michael Smith shot even par after the first nine, but struggled to close out the day with four bogeys on the back nine. Smith is currently tied for 19th overall with a three-over 75. Freshman Austin Green also struggled on the back nine. After shooting two under on the front Green finished the day tied for 19th with a three-over 75. Freshman Mitchell McLeroy is currently tied for 30th overall with a five over 77.
 
The 'Jacks return to action Tuesday at 8 a.m. to begin the second round of play from Carter Plantation.
