LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – The ground work on a military base to serve the Central East Texas area has started.

The base will be shared by the National Guard and the Army Reserve and will house 200 people. The construction is underway at its location on the intersection of Timberland and the loop.

There isn't a completion date set for the base yet, but the according to Lufkin's Economic Development Director, Jim Wehmeier, the city is excited to see a military presence in the area.

The hope is they will be instrumental in disaster response and recovery for East Texas.
