Lufkin Police make first arrest in connection to January shooting death

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police have made their first arrest in connection to the January shooting death of a Lufkin man.

Det. J.B. Smith said Elton Gibson Jr., 19, will be charged with murder. He was arrested Thursday without incident.

Smith said police expect to make additional arrests in the death of Joseph Cooper, 63.

Cooper died around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 19 from a single gunshot to the torso on Cotton Belt Street.

Smith said Corp. Travis Strickland and Det. Gabe Wall headed up the investigation that led to the arrest.
