LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Police are in the process of charging a Lufkin man with aggravated assault after he attempted to run over an officer while he was in the process of serving a warrant Friday morning, a spokesman said.

Det. J.B. Smith said officers were waiting at the home for Refugio Gonzalez Escobedo, 33, when he pulled into the parking lot of Lazy Oaks Apartments, where he lived. Officers approached his vehicle to serve a warrant for sexual assault of a child. Escobedo drove straight at Det. Gabe Wall, who jumped out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.

Escobedo fled officers in his vehicle, then by foot, but was eventually apprehended. Smith said it was not known where he was apprehended.

The warrant was issued in connection to Escobedo's sexual relationship with a minor, Smith said. Police are working on charges related to him trying to run over Wall, Smith said.
