SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) – The family of a murdered man spoke out Tuesday night. Authorities have charged Allen Calhoun's brother and sister-in-law for brutally beating Calhoun to death. In an exclusive report, the accused's own son says he feels deceived by his father and step-mother.
Over the phone, Joseph Calhoun, told us about his murdered uncle, Allen Calhoun. Joseph says he looked to Allen like a father figure.
"We went fishing. We went hunting. We went everywhere together," he said.
That ended in 2008, when Allen moved to Timpson under the care of his brother and sister-in-law.
"When my uncle moved up there I was very, very worried and very mad about it because for one I didn't agree with it and they knew I would be mad. So, they did it behind my back when I was out of town and the next thing I know they got power of attorney over him and got all of his money," said Joseph Calhoun.
Last week, Joseph's father and step-mother, Rex and Lana Sue Calhoun were charged with capital murder. Authorities say Allen was beaten-to-death inside his home on Sept. 22, 2009. Joseph says he and his wife, Tabitha, didn't find out Allen had died, until February 2010.
"Rex and Suzie spoke to us as if Allen was still alive... going to church everyday, just hanging out, reading his bible, working out in the yard, feeding the horses, doing good from what we knew," said Tabitha Calhoun via telephone.
"We asked them what did Allen do all day? I remember one comment she [Lana Sue Calhoun] made was he sleeps all day. Knowing what really happened, her saying that was just kind of cruel," said Joseph Calhoun.
For months, Joseph says he tried to call Allen with special news.
"My little boy was born and I was going try to play it off behind their back and send him some money where he could just get in his truck when she's asleep and he's at work or when they're both asleep and drive down here and see my little boy," said Joseph Calhoun.
Joseph says he feels deceived by his father and step-mother. He never got a chance to say goodbye to his uncle.
"I miss Allen very much. He was my best friend," he said.
Rex and Lana Calhoun are in the Panola County Jail with no bond. The Shelby County D.A.'s office says the case is still under investigation.
