LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Tulane Drive overpass, which has been closed for months as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's U.S. 59 construction project, was opened Thursday morning to all traffic.
The overpass, of which the closing frustrated drivers since late 2008, has two stoplights on each side, which replaces stop signs. There are also u-turn lanes on the east and west side of the overpass, which should provide less congestion than the former version of the overpass.
Thursday morning's ribbon cutting marks the opening of the final facility of the 59 project. According to TxDOT spokeswoman Kathi White, all that is left of the project is final paving in locations sucah as Loop 287 and Whitehouse Drive and landscaping and painting that will go on through much of the summer.
