MT. PLEASANT – The magic mustered by the Angelina College Roadrunners over the final week of the regular season didn't carry over into the Region XIV tournament, with AC eliminated Sunday with a 7-3 loss to Alvin in Mt. Pleasant.
For the second straight day, Roadrunners hitters found themselves baffled by an opposing left-handed pitcher. Alvin's Machon Trimm used an array of off-speed and breaking pitches to hold the ‘Runners to four hits and a single run over seven innings. Trimm struck out three, walked two and didn't allow a multi-hit inning by the ‘Runners until the seventh inning, when AC posted two runs on an Alvin error, a walk and consecutive singles.
Dolphin leadoff man Blake Marchal drove in two runs and scored twice in a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Wilmy Marrero added an RBI triple, Cameron Wheeless drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Drew Vest drove in a run while collecting a pair of singles and scoring twice.
No Roadrunner finished with more than one hit in the game. Greg Garcia singled and scored on an infield error in the third; and Ryan Wilburn and Jordan Fuller singled as part of a two-run seventh. All of AC's hits were singles; in the two tournament games, the Roadrunners did not get a single extra-base hit.
Before that seventh inning, Alvin's Trimm had faced just three batters over the minimum, getting an inning-ending double-play ball to close out the fifth to shut down an AC threat.
The Dolphins scored three runs in the second on a Marchal double sandwiched between four singles – all taking place with two outs. In the third, Marrero's triple followed Travis Snider's single; Wheeless scored Marrero with a sacrifice fly, Vest singled and stole two bases and Marchan drove in his second run of the game with a single to chase AC starter Chase Greening. ‘Runner reliever Nick Wright finished the final 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run in his time on the mound.
The Roadrunners end their season at 28-28.
