Lufkin courting aerospace manufacturing company

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - By Jeff Awtrey - email

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Economic Development board is recommending the city offer an tax incentive deal to a aerospace manufacturing company.

Economic Development Director Jim Wehmeier said the company would employ about 30 workers at start-up and grow to more than 100 employees within five years.

The city council will vote on approving the incentives deal at Tuesday's meeting.

"We should know in June if they're coming or not," Wehmeier said, following Monday's economic development board meeting. "If they decide to, they'll move pretty quickly and begin moving in."

Wehmeier said the company is looking at either moving into a present facility in Lufkin or building their own.

Lufkin will be seeing more shake-ups on the retail side, as Buffalo Wild Wings is planning to join the Garden District, behind Cheddar's restaurant, Wehmeier said. The national restaurant chain describes itself as a buffalo wings restaurant and sports bar, with plans to expand to more than 1,000 locations nationwide.

HEB grocery will be moving out of its current location on Timberland Drive and into the old Albertsons building, on the corner of Timberland Drive and Chestnut Street, which is twice the size of the old facility. The move is expected to be completed by mid-June, Wehmeier said.

Baskin's department store is moving from its location on Timberland Drive to the old Circuit City building in Lufkin Mall, Wehmeier said.
