Haley shuts down Dayton

EASTLAKE, Ohio (Press release) - Lake County starting pitcher and former Central Heights Blue Devil Trey Haley fired seven shutout innings and catcher Chun Chen went 4 for 4 as the Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-3 on Tuesday night. The Dragons saw their three-game winning streak snapped as their record fell to 13-12 on the year. Lake County improved to 18-8.

The Captains took advantage of five Dayton errors leading to five unearned runs to hand the Dragons a loss in the first game of Dayton's six-game road trip.

Haley allowed just three hits over seven scoreless innings, walking one and striking out nine for the win. He retired 13 straight batters over the early innings of the game.

Dayton showed little signs of life until the eighth inning. Trailing 5-0, Dragons right fielder Josh Garton led off the eighth with a long home run to right field, his first with the club, to make it 5-1. With one out, Alex Oliveras reached on a bunt single and went to second on a single by DiDi Gregorius. Henry Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Andrew Means grounded into a fielder's choice as Oliveras scored to make it 5-2. Means stole second and the Dragons had runners at second and third with two outs, but Lake County reliever Cory Burns, the league leader in saves, struck out Dayton's Chris Richburg to end the threat.

Lake County scored three times against Dragons reliever Junior Martinez in the bottom of the eighth to build an 8-2 lead. The Dragons scored once in the ninth on a Garton triple followed by a Shane Carlson run-scoring single to close out the scoring.

Dayton finished with eight hits. Garton was 2 for 4 with a home run and triple. Gregorius was also 2 for 4 and stole a base.

The Dragons play at Lake County against the Captains again Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Pedro Villarreal (0-2, 4.33) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Joe Gardner (1-0, 3.68). The Dragons next home game is Monday, May 10 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.
