HEMPHILL, TX (KTRE) - The Sabine County Sheriff's Office is investigating what a medical examiner's office is calling a homicide in the death of a 22-month-old girl.
Authorities still have not named a suspect in the brutal death of Detyreunna Price. Sabine County Sheriff's Deputy George Griffith is working the case.
"It is very horrific and it's very sad that something would happen to a child like this." he said.
Griffith said Detreunna suffered from bite marks and belt marks from a whipping. "There was at least one possibly two burn marks from an iron on the child."
Price was rushed to a Sabine County hospital by her father's girlfriend at noon Wednesday. At 3 p.m. she was transported to a Houston hospital. At 6 p.m. authorities were finally notified about her disturbing injuries.
"I'm going to talk to the director of the hospital and ask a few questions why we weren't contacted until so many hours later," said Griffith.
He said law enforcement should have been contacted.
"It would have helped a lot, we could have been there, we could have taken pictures of the child, talked the step-mother or girlfriend or whatever she is and it could have sped things up," said Griffith.
At this time, authorities believe the little girl suffered a severe head injury right outside her father's trailer home in Hemphill. While they piece together what happened, they're not releasing the suspects names.
Although they haven't been named suspects, Griffith said he's trying to track down Detyreunna's father and girlfriend for questioning.
"Right now, we're trying to get them to come into the office and give us a statement. So, I cannot say exactly what has happened yet until I speak with them," he explained.
They're hoping her parents can shed light on why this toddler suffered such a horrible death.
According to Sheriff Tom Maddox, Detyreunna Price died Saturday at 12:02 a.m. at Houston hospital.
Maddox said the case is under investigation. Texas Ranger Danny Young is assisting the sheriff's office.
