Chireno ISD opts to fire longtime basketball coach

CHIRENO, TX (KTRE) - The Chireno ISD board of trustees voted Monday night to terminate the contract of their longtime girls basketball coach, at the recommendation of its superintendent.

Coach Pam Muse, who says she has been a coach with the school for 19 years, said she is seeking legal action on the matter and hopes to return next year.

"I have an obligation to fill and want to keep serving the community," Muse said.

Superintendent Roger Dees would not comment on why he recommended terminating her contract because it is a personnel matter and still an open case.

As head girls basketball coach Muse led the Lady Owls to eight district championships and a run to the state semifinals in 2003. Chireno made the playoffs in 13 out of 19 years.

Muse said she started the tennis program, and the Lady Owls won 14 out of 16 district titles, including 12 in a row. She also coached the boys tennis team and girls track and cross country.

Muse coached the Nacogdoches County girls at this past year's KTRE River Rivalry basketball game in April. Her team fell to the Angelina County girls.
