NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams will be sending 18 athletes and two relay teams to the opening rounds of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. The Ladyjacks will be sending eight athletes and their 1,600-meter relay team, while the 'Jacks will be sending 10 athletes along with the 1,600-meter relay team.
The three-day meet will begin Thursday, May 27 and will be hosted by the University of Texas. It is also one of two venues that will host an opening-round meet (Greensboro, N.C.) The new format is a switch from the regional meet format that has been used for the past several seasons.
The Ladyjacks have several sprinters that will be looking to advance to the outdoor championship meet in Eugene, Ore. next month. Junior Arteria Sterns enters the meet ranked 31st in the 100 meters and 35th in the 200 meters. Sophomore Mary Dickerson, who also runs a leg of the Ladyjacks 4x400-meter relay, is currently 43rd in the 400-meter dash. Classmate Stephanie Ganter made the cut in the women's 5,000 meters. She advances as the 47th-best runner in the west.
The Ladyjacks also sent two hurdlers to the meet in Austin. Senior Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye will look to keep her successful SFA career going in the 100-meter hurdles. Egboba-Waye is currently ranked 26th in the region. Freshman Dezera Dunlap just made the cut in the women's 400-meters posting a time of 1:01.07 to rank 46th. The 1,600-meter relay team ranked as the 21st fastest team in the field.
Egboba-Waye will also compete in one field event. She is currently ranked 26th in the long jump. Sophomore Carrie Hahn enters the meet ranked 41st in the high jump. Junior Camelia Sams is the team's third jumper who will be competing. She is ranked 47th in the region in the triple jump. Senior Frednisha Marshall will round out the Ladyjacks squad in the shot put competition. Marshall enters the event with the 35th-best throw in the competition.
The Lumberjacks also have a very strong presence on the track led by sophomore Nick McCloud who will be competing in two events. McCloud enters the meet ranked 38th in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. Freshman Joe Barb is ranked 26th in the 400-meter dash, and he will also run a leg of the 'Jacks' 4X400-meter relay which is ranked 11th in the field. The 'Jacks' final track athlete will be sophomore Adam Saloom in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Saloom enters the race ranked 47th overall.
Freshman Josh Cravens is among the field's top-15 in the long jump. The first-year standout enters the meet ranked 13th in the event. Senior Josh Cruse gives SFA a solid one-two punch in the jumps. Cruse is ranked 34th in the triple jump.
Throwers Jon Arthur and Matt Langdon will each be competing in multiple events. Langdon will compete in the discus (34th) and hammer throw (37th), while Arthur will look to advance in the shot put (15th) and hammer (43rd).
