LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – They were there during Ike and Rita, and thanks to a donation, the Deep East Texas Amateur Radio Club will continue helping Angelina County during disasters and emergencies.
Memorial Hospital wanted to help the radio club, so they donated two paging transmitters.
Normally, this equipment would total about $20,000.
It's a huge help to the radio club. They rely on donations to provide their services.
"We agreed to donate it so that they could have it available so in case of emergencies or if the local phone systems were down, they would have a way to help communicate within our community," said Chief Financial officer for Memorial Health System of East Texas Kristi Gay.
Amateur radio operators have responded to local and regional disasters since the 1970s and more recently with hurricanes.
