LUFKIN, TX (News Release) The Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) 2009 Presidents Award for outstanding committee work this year posthumously honored Newton's former Mayor, Rachel Martin.  Bruce Broadnax, Martin's son, accepted the award at DETCOG's annual membership meeting in Lufkin.  The Presidents Award is given each year to the DETCOG Committee Member who has shown dedication, commitment, loyalty and interest in helping the citizens of Deep East Texas improve their way of life.

Martin was born and raised in Newton County and graduated from Newton High School.  She possessed many talents – painter, poet, song writer, pilot, flower arranger and musician. Martin served as a member of the DETCOG Board of Directors from 2005 to 2010.  She was a member of the regional economic development committee and chaired the regional health and human services advisory council.  She served for two years on the executive and budget committee, during that time she was DETCOG's second vice-president.

In making the presentation, DETCOG President, Donnie Henson, said, "We all are deeply grateful to Rachel Martin for her dedicated service, her steadfast advocacy for the people of Newton and the region, and her leadership within DETCOG."
