LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – He was a successful coach and physical education teacher in East Texas for more than 54 years.
Saturday evening, Willie Emmett Ross aka "Axe-Man" was surprised with a special tribute held at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Lufkin, where former Panther athletes, friends and family honored his many accomplishments.
Ross coached football and track in Diboll, and then continued his success at Dunbar and later Lufkin high school.
The Willie Ross relays held in Lufkin annually are named in his honor.
"We've had great times and had great teams in Lufkin and I enjoyed every minute of it, and I love these kids in Lufkin," said Ross.
He says he's proud to have coached several winning track and football teams, and one of his greatest experiences, is winning 49 football games in a row while coaching in Lufkin.
