Malta teacher shot through front door of home

DE KALB, Texas (AP) - Police say a teacher in Northeast Texas was shot through the front door of her home on the last day of school.

De Kalb Police Chief Shawne Walraven said Friday that the teacher was shot shortly after 3 a.m. after someone rang her doorbell twice. Walraven says the teacher cracked open the door and that a man in his 60s on her porch asked to be let in.

When she refused, he fired five shots through the door, striking her three times in the torso. Walraven says she underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

About a block away and 45 minutes later, a newspaper carrier reported to police that an unknown person shot at his truck, striking it twice. The carrier was uninjured.

Walraven says the shootings appear to be random.

The woman teaches in the Malta school district.
