CARTHAGE, TX (KLTV) - The Normandy invasion on June 6th of 1944 signaled the beginning of the end for Hitler's German Empire in Europe. Bill Spurgeon arrived in Normandy on D-Day One and went on to fight in the biggest battle of the war "the Battle of the Bulge".

Spurgeon was only 15 when he joined the Army in 1940, as he puts it, "to make a living." He never dreamed that for his $21 a month paycheck, he would be fighting a war and would be wounded in battle. At the age of 85, Bill Spurgeon looks back at his service in World War II with pride, saying always "we did as the right thing."
