NACOGDOCHES TX, (Press release) -The Nacogdoches Police Department just finished a very successful STEP enforcement wave.
The police department participates in STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) several times each year. During STEP, officers cover the city with heavy traffic enforcement, specifically speed, seat belt usage and child safety seat usage. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase traffic law compliance and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
During this STEP wave officers issued 524 citations and logged 150 hours of enforcement. NPD officers also arrested 17 drivers for DWI during this period. The department also participated in a DWI No Refusal weekend. Nacogdoches enjoyed a relatively safe Memorial Day weekend with only two accidents in the entire city over the three day weekend, neither of which involved alcohol, and no injuries.
"We're confident that heavy enforcement works," said Nacogdoches Police Lieutenant, Dan Taravella. "It works year round with our normal traffic enforcement and it works during our holiday STEP enforcement waves. If our heavy enforcement prevents one accident, which prevents a death or serious injury to someone, then we've accomplished our goal. Many of our holidays involve alcohol so we're asking people to use designated drivers and prevent others from drinking and driving," Taravella said. "We encourage drivers of all ages to buckle up, slow down and not drink and drive. For some drivers, strict enforcement is the only way to gain compliance. We strive to make our roads as safe as we possibly can."
The next STEP enforcement wave in Nacogdoches will be over the July 4th weekend.
