Kansas City, Kansas-AP -- A powerful tornado has killed at least one person and flattened several buildings in the Kansas City area.
The death occurred in Kansas City, Kansas. A hospital in Kansas City says it's treating people for tornado-related injuries but no numbers are available yet.
Kansas City spokesman Don Denney says searchers are looking for other possible victims. Denney says "dozens and dozens" of homes were significantly damaged and several were destroyed.
The National Weather Service says the swath of destruction in some areas was one-quarter mile wide. The tornado moved through Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties on the Kansas side, then across the Missouri line into Platte and Clay counties.
In Kansas, footage from television news helicopters showed homes demolished or damaged in Wyandotte County. There were also reports that a subdivision was flattened in Leavenworth.
