21st Annual Blueberry Festival attracts thousands

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – Thousands come from all over Texas for one thing—blueberries, and lots of them.

The 21st annual blueberry festival held in downtown Nacogdoches offers everything from blueberry pancakes, to blueberry lemonade, plus the opportunity to head out to "the Blueberry Place" and pick your own berries.

Seven-year-old John Tansey knows a whole lot about blueberries.

"I'm a real good picker. That's why I get a big bucket every year," said John. "Oh yes there's a lot of big ones."

He's pretty good at spotting the sweetest of berries.

For John's family, it's tradition to travel from Houston, to Nacogdoches, for the big festival.

"You go for the blueberry pancakes in the morning. You get up, you come here and pick," said John's mother, Jennifer Tansey.

Six-year-old Adrienne Hill is also here to pick.

"It's really fun," said Hill.

"She called me from Houston and said nanny I want to come back to Nacogdoches and pick blueberries and that's why we're here today," said Hill's grandmother Teresa Fullur.

With harness on, and bucket in hand, they are pleased with their collections.

"They're really big and they're plentiful," said Tansey.

Owner of "The Blueberry Place", Sherrie Randall, says things are looking good on the farm.

"Good crop, better than last year because we had that late freeze that wiped out like two thirds of the crop but we're going to have a good crop this year," said Randall.

Pickers are noticing.

"The crop looks a little bit bigger than last year," said Stanley Bohon.

"They're sweet, delicious," said Fullur.

Without a doubt the best part is picking them and then tasting them.

Of course you have to make sure you save some for later, or at least the ride back.

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce tells us the blueberry festival generates roughly one million dollars a year, a huge boost for the local economy.
