East Texans discover cold cash with snow cones

By Holley Nees - email

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - One young East Texan says she started a job at a snow cone stand just a few weeks ago as a way to make some extra cash.

"It's tough for teenagers to find a job because of the economy," Whitney Dugat said.

She says several of her high school friends spend their summers shaving ice to earn some "cold" cash. Dugat is saving up for college, but also finds other ways to use her hard-earned dollars.

"Gas money mostly, and clothes," Dugat said.

Dugat says the part-time job at the snow cone stand ends up saving her parents money.

"We charge her like ten dollars per month for car insurance so it goes along with responsibility," her mother, Loraine, said.

And they don't have to shell out as much for the extra things her daughter wants.

"The name-brand jeans she wants sometimes are so expensive so she buys them," Loraine said. "Some of the shoes that she buys, we do half. If she'll pay half, then we'll pay half, so it saves us money."

She says the hours are good, and for her daughter, the pay is sweet.

"She gets to buy whatever she wants herself," Loraine said. "I don't have to pay for it."

Dugat says she would encourage anyone who has a little extra time in the summer to get a part-time job like this one to help make ends meet.
