NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - East Texas is coming under siege by brazen burglars.
In the last week alone thieves made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen property, not to mention the damage left behind.
With hundreds of new cases in deep east Texas, authorities hope to put a face to the crime.
"Burglaries have become a problem," Nacogdoches Police Sgt. Bill Kennedy said.
It's a major dilemma Kennedy faces every day. He says the burglary cases keep piling up.
He says most will go unsolved, sitting in a stack.
"It's a very hard crime to solve," Kennedy said. "Generally there's very little evidence left behind at the scene and most of them occur at night."
Police have stepped up patrol in crime-stricken areas. Kennedy says it's helping. Police caught one man, Jakelin Greer, breaking into cars at "The Car Doctor." Owner Rick Christy was ecstatic. He says burglars have hit him hard.
"It's very frustrating," Christy said. "It's a gut-wrenching feeling. I mean it just makes me sick and then of course I have to go back and make it right for everybody. It's costing me."
Christy has had enough of car burglars. He's moving his business down the street.
"It's all fenced in with a big razor wire fence around it so hopefully that will put a stop to some of the theft that's happening at my business," Christy said.
Kennedy says locking your doors and watching out for neighbors will help deter thieves.
"They're going to take the path of least resistance to get to their goal and that's to get to somebody else's stuff," Kennedy said.
