LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin Police officer was x-rayed for a hand injury following a tussle Tuesday night with a man he was attempting to arrest, Lufkin Police say.

According to Det. J.B. Smith, at 7 p.m. a caller reported a man, later identified as Alex Yanez, 20, of Lufkin, to be walking near the intersection of Ford Chapel Road and Cunningham Street with a bicycle wheel. The caller said he thought the wheel belonged to a bicycle he owned which was stolen.

Smith said Officer Brad Lawrence arrived on the scene and during questioning, he discovered Yanez had outstanding traffic warrants. Lawrence informed Yanez he would arrest him, and while he attempted to handcuff him, Yanez attacked Lawrence.

Lawrence managed to subdue Yanez and call for help, Smith said. Once other officers arrived, they were able to arrest Yanez.

Lawrence suffered injuries to his right hand, elbow, both knees and his eyes. He had his hand x-rayed at a Lufkin hospital and was released.

Yanez is charged with assault of a public servant and evading arrest.
