NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) – They may not seem dangerous, but Nacogdoches County deputies are warning East Texans to be cautious of "mailbox bottle bombs".
According to Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss, at least four bottle bombs were placed in mailboxes in the Douglass Community sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
Kerss said the plastic bottles contained unknown chemical mixtures, and the pressure inside the bottles was enough to cause them to explode, destroying the mailboxes.
The incidents remain under investigation, and Kerss says there are no known suspects at this time.
Kerss wants homeowners to be careful when checking their mail late at night or early in the morning. He says those responsible for placing the bottle bombs in mailboxes may be doing it as a harmless prank, but wants to remind the public that these bombs are dangerous and could cause injury. Suspects could also potentially face federal and state charges.
If you see any suspicious behavior in your neighborhood or need to report information on related incidents contact the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Department immediately.
