LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It may be an odd choice, but the Angelina County Jail may be the greenest building in the county by the fall.
Last fall, county commissioners applied for a grant that would provide funds to upgrade the energy efficiency of several county buildings. One of the projects included constructing solar panels on the county jail, which is the consumer of the most energy. Today, commissioners learned the grant was approved. Plus, Oncor Energy rebates will be used to increase the overall budget for the project.
"This rebate will add to the amount of the grant money which will allow us to get a much bigger facility which will generate more electricity which will save us more money in energy bills," Auditor Eddie Gray said.
It's a win-win for the county since the construction of the solar panels are taken care of and they will save so much in electricity. They hope the panels will be up and running by the fall.
