HUDSON, TX (KTRE) – The Hudson assistant fire chief says he was puzzled when he was asked to attend Tuesday's city council meeting.

It turns out Chris Smith is the first to receive a special award for those going beyond the call of duty.

Smith risked his life, just six weeks ago to rescue a young woman who was unconscious in her burning vehicle.

Tuesday evening that woman, Elizabeth Ruiz, got her first chance to thank the man who saved her life.

"It's nice to be able to have a little appreciation shown. Sometimes it just gives me a good feeling or two to know we're making a difference," said Smith.

"If there was another word besides thank you, I would definitely tell him you know but it feels good you know to know my hero is here and he saved me and I'm really, really thankful," said Ruiz.

Ruiz says thanks to Smith's courageous act, she's alive today.
