LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police arrested a Fort Worth man Sunday night for being a felon in possession of a firearm after responding to a domestic dispute call.

According to the police report, officer responded to a call on the 800 block of Lazy Oaks Street. Officers spoke to John George Veriato, 35, and his girlfriend, each of who reported having been assaulted by the other.

Officers did not see any evidence to support either claim and referred the assault for further investigation. However, the report states Veriato was collecting his property from the residence and one of the items was a lockbox containing a pistol.

Veriato was convicted for possession of a controlled substance in 2007, a felony. Being a felon in possession of a firearm is itself a state felony offense.
