Convicted murderer Kyle Barnhill seeks appeal

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – Convicted Nacogdoches murderer Kyle Barnhill wants his prison time reduced.

Barnhill has been in a Wichita Falls state prison cell since late September 2009. He's spent much of his time behind bars working on an appeal.

Barnhill was sentenced to life in prison after shooting his estranged wife, Melissa Barnhill, through the kitchen window in mid-March 2009.

According to the Nacogdoches County District Attorney's Office, Barnhill's first attempt at an appeal was rejected when a court appointed attorney found no wrong doing in the trial.

Now Barnhill is representing himself, while attempting to appeal by filing a brief of what he thinks went wrong during the trial.

The district attorney's office said it's not uncommon for convicted murderers sentenced to seek an appeal.

"I  spent a lot of time in his head and I'm not surprised by this," said Lee Westmoreland, assistant district attorney. "Kyle is a self-centered narcissist."

The district attorney's office has until Aug. 12 to respond to Barnhill's claims.
