LUFKIN (KTRE)- Lufkin Police have arrested and charged a suspect in the mid-morning armed robbery of the Rent 1st Store on S. Timberland Drive on Thursday.
The arrest came after hours of searching for the suspect who made his getaway in a car stolen from the store manager.
Police found the car abandoned at McDonald's on Timberland Drive and then tracked the suspect to the Motel 6 nearby. Police said the suspect, William Colquitt, 38, had been living at the motel.
It all started when police received a call around 10 Thursday morning that a suspect with a gun had stolen cash from the store's cash register, and had also taken store merchandise. The robber then took off in the store manager's car.
"Employee said that a black male had robbed him, stolen cash from the store, a laptop from the store and fled in the victim's car," said Detective J.B. Smith, Lufkin Police Department.
Police said a good description of the suspect who was said to be bald and muscular, about 6'2, wearing a white cutoff shirt and black baggy jeans, as well as, a detailed description of the stolen car helped their investigation.
"These situations evolve so quickly. Officers from all over the city - all Lufkin Police officers responded to the area to search for the subject," said Smith.
Lufkin P.D.'s investigation led them to room 139 in the Motel 6 on Timberland Drive.
That's when they spotted a man who matched the description of the suspected robber.
"[Officers] spoke with him, found property on him from Rent First robbery," said Smith.
William Colquitt was booked in the Angelina County Jail for aggravated robbery Thursday afternoon.
