TRINITY CO., TX (KTRE) – They bravely broke into a house but their fearless deed quickly changed to fearsome after a neighbor spoiled their caper.
Three 13-year old boys were arrested after a man spotted the trio using a hammer to smash through the window of his neighbor's side French doors in the Pinecrest Subdivision.
Forty-six year old Lawrence Harnhtkiewitz told investigators that he went inside the house after the boys and asked them to come out with him. With one of them still carrying a hammer, the boys now quiet and timid, according to Harnhtkiewitz, obeyed. Harnhtkiewitz marched them to the caretaker's house and proceeded to call 9-1-1. He said as he was calling authorities, the boys were on their cell phones calling their parents.
"This was a very brave neighbor. He showed great fortitude. Incidents like this also prove neighborhood watch, works," Trinity County Sheriff Ralph Montemayor said. "More people should get involved and watch out for their neighbors."
Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home on Post Point Road and took the three boys into custody shortly after 4 p.m. Their parents later went to the Sheriff's office in Groveton to pick them up. Sheriff Montemayor said the parents were "mortified and couldn't believe their sons were in trouble." The sheriff said the boys had never been in trouble with the law before.
The juveniles were released to their parents Monday night. All three are charged with burglary of a habitation.
