Freedom Fighters: Jim Ray

BROWNSBORO, TX (KLTV) - On May 8,1966, American pilot Jim Ray was taken prisoner by the Vietcong. He remained their prisoner six years, nine months and four days. Torture included the infamous rope torture and sleep deprivation. Prisoners were usually kept in solitary confinement and could communicate only by "tapping" in code on the walls of their cells. Forced to confess to "war crimes", Ray put in numerous false references to make it clear that the confession was forced.

In 1969 conditions began to change at the Hanoi Hilton. When President Nixon learned of the prisoner's treatment, he "took the lid off" the previous administration's silence policy. International pressure on the Vietcong changed their treatment and Ray was finally released February 12,1972, saying he bears no hate for the individuals but does hate the Communist System that encourages such cruelty.
