NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

By Holley Nees - email

APPLEBY, TX (KTRE) - Law enforcement personnel say two women and a man are dead in an apparent double homicide-suicide shooting Friday afternoon in the Appleby area.

Sheriff Thomas Kerss said the body of the suspect, Preston Skelton, 73, had been located around 3:20 p.m.

Kerss said the initial investigation showed the women, Helen Meeler, 59, and Connie Moses, 58, had been in an ongoing dispute over the property line, located on County Road 262, and it apparently flared up today when the victims began building a fence. Kerss said the shooter then came outside and shot them.

Authorities had been looking for the shooter for more than two hours and stopping traffic on Appleby Sand Road in Nacogdoches County. Kerss said the shooter went into a wooded area behind his residence after he shot the women. He said lawmen have recovered a rifle which they believe the shooter used to kill himself.

The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. The sheriff's office notified NISD of the incident and they held the buses, as all of Appleby Sand Road was closed.
