HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Bay-Waveland School District will celebrate the opening of two new schools today, five years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the community. Waveland Elementary's ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 9:00 this morning. That will be followed by a 10:30 a.m. ribbon cutting at North Bay Elementary.

"Five years ago, Hurricane Katrina decimated our schools and community. This fall for the first time in five years, we began the school year with all of our students and teachers in a building," said Dr. Rebecca Ladner, Bay-Waveland Schools Superintendent.

Since Katrina, all kindergarten through fourth grade students had to attend school in portable buildings. But, that all changed with the start of this school year.

Waveland Elementary Principal, Dr. Frances Weiler said, "It has been a long road to recovery, but these beautiful new schools were worth the wait."
