Longtime Lufkin educator laid to rest

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Family, friends, and fellow educators gathered Thursday morning at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church to say their final goodbyes to retired Lufkin teacher Laura Patricia Claybon.

Speakers during the service described her as a loving mother, caring friend, and faithful organist for Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.  Claybon taught third, fourth and fifth grade at Brandon Elementary School and Coston Elementary until her retirement from Lufkin Independent School District.

She was born October 3, 1919.  She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1937 as Salutatorian of her class.  She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree from Houston-Tillotson University and a Master of Linguistics Degree from Texas Southern University.

Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority gave a special presentation in honor of their deceased soror.

Claybon is survived by daughters, Cedric Buckley and Vicki Sellers, and her granddaughter Tracy D. Claybon.

Rev. Mack O. Page was the officiating minister.
