UPDATE: Drivers identified in major accident in Corrigan involving 18-wheeler

CORRIGAN, TX (KTRE) – Corrigan Police have released the names of the drivers involved in a collision between an 18-wheeler and another vehicle.

According to Chief James Riley, the driver of a car traveling southbound and apparently veered over into northbound traffic and struck an oncoming 18-wheeler has been identified as Thomas Anthony Gonzaleas, 20.  Carl J. Perkins, 49, was the driver of the 18-wheeler.  Riley said Perkins was not injured.

"Gonzaleas was suffering from serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to a Tyler hospital," Chief Riley said.

Gonzaleas is hospitalized at East Texas Medical Center.  Hospital officials said they could not release any information about his condition and referred all inquiries to his family.

Investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the accident which happened on Friday.  At this time, no citations have been issued. The accident reduced traffic along Highway 59 to two lanes and at times brought traffic to a standstill. A Hazmat team was called in to help clear debris, including oil spilled from the vehicles.

The investigation is continuing.
