Once hailed as "The Tomato Capitol Of Texas," the city of Jacksonville still honors its tomato heritage with homegrown tomatoes, a yearly festival, and its historic Tomato Bowl.
Jacksonville began growing tomatoes in the 1800s and soon was shipping crates of tomatoes throughout the country.
Seventy years ago, the Tomato Bowl was built in downtown Jacksonville, and has been in continuous use since then. Named as "one of the ten best stadiums in Texas" by Texas Monthly Magazine, the Bowl is the best known landmark in the city and stands as a symbol of Jacksonville's tomato history.
The 70th anniversary of the Tomato Bowl will be celebrated November 5th at the football game between Jacksonville High School and John Tyler High School.
