NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The man appointed chief financial officer at Nacogdoches ISD has stepped down amid controversy over his nomination.
NISD Superintendent Rodney Hutto stated in an e-mail that Phil Mahar withdrew his name from consideration, just three weeks after the school board approved his nomination in a 5-2 vote.
The controversy over Mahar's nomination came after Nacogdoches residents and at least one school board member became concerned after a second set of job qualifications became posted that did not require a master's degree.
As Hutto pointed out, the superintendent does not need the board's approval when hiring administrative staff. And the board had approved the nomination anyway.
