Lufkin man says he owes his life to blood donations

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - He says there's no question. Blood saved James Slack's life.

It took nearly 10 gallons of blood during a trip to the emergency room a decade ago, when a condition caused blood in his arm to clot. When doctors opened his arm, he bled profusely.

Five surgeries and months of physical therapy later, he has the use of his arm back.

It's ironic, he says, because he's donated blood for years, eventually needing it himself.

Now he gives even more frequently.

"It really struck home," Slack said. "I was glad I'd been a donor and certainly appreciated all those nameless people that had donated for me and you know since then I've learned that very few people donate and there's not a lot of people who can donate, but those that are able, should."

You can become a hero and commit for life by joining KTRE in giving blood on Oct. 21.

From noon until 6 p.m., you can give blood at the Gaslight Brookshire Brothers in Lufkin and at Fresh Market on University Drive in Nacogdoches.
