PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - It was on the islands of the South Pacific in World War II that M.T. "Bub" Blackmon got his real taste of war. Blackmon drove an amphibious landing craft in the invasions of Pelalu and Okinawa. On beaches littered with bodies and body parts, Blackmon zig-zagged his craft to miss the big guns.
The War Department sent Blackmon's parents a telegram telling them he had been killed. They did not know he was alive until a year later when they received another telegram saying he was alive but had had his leg blown off. Neither report was true, although Blackmon came close to death when he was wounded on Okinawa.
It has been 65 years since the end of World War II and yet every night since then, Blackmon has relived the horrors of war in his dreams.
