LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – More than 1,000 turtles raced to the finish line.

Saturday marked the 5th annual amazing turtle race held at Ellen Trout Zoo.

It was a close competition. It came down to two winners, neck and neck.

Their greatest supporters were cheering them on.

More than $8,000 was raised to fund Angelina Beautiful Clean for the entire year.

"For every dollar that we raise at this fundraiser we turn back $23 to the community. So this helps support everything such as our household hazardous waste day, our shred it days, all of our recycling programs in the schools and education," said chairman of Angelina Beautiful Clean, Geno Carrier.

There were more than 50 winners who adopted turtles.

Several sponsors were there supporting the race, including the KTRE Consolidated Communications Mobile Studio.
