NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – They're promoting dignity, hope and recovery. The National Alliance on Mental Illness in Nacogdoches has teamed up with the Stephen F. Austin social work department to promote awareness in the community.
Roughly 30 people came out for the first walk/run at TJR elementary to raise money for the organization.
Some of the funds will help support the Rusk state hospital, as well as educational materials on mental illnesses.
"It's for education, it's for advocacy and what we are striving so hard now is to remove the stigma of mental illness," said Jenarie Alexander.
Organizers say most people don't realize what mental illness is.
They hope people can take the time to become educated on the three major brain disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression.
People of any age, within any family can be affected.
