LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - A potentially dangerous situation ended with the arrest of a Lufkin man who tried to destroy evidence that he was cooking methamphetamine in a bedroom, according to Lufkin Police.

According to police spokesman Det. J.B. Smith, officers answered a call of suspicious activity on Hubbard Street around 10 p.m. Monday. Residents of the home let officers in and they tried to make contact with a man, later identified as John Wesley Gilcrease, 33, in the bedroom.

Police saw smoke coming from under the door, Smith said, and Gilcrease eventually let police in, where they determined he was trying to burn evidence that he was cooking meth.

Smith said a test showed presence of meth in the room and Gilcrease was arrested for a charge of tampering with evidence.

Narcotics officers are investigating further charges for Gilcrease, Smith said.
